When I was a young girl, our family lived down the lane from a woman by the name of Mrs. Martin. She was an elderly lady who lived in a very small house that she had once shared with her husband prior to his passing. A visit to Mrs. Martins house was like stepping into the past, she made everything, clothing, blankets, canned foods, soap, and many other things. We always had some of Mrs. Martin’s soap at our house, it was a no-frills unscented bar, slightly off white in color and we used it for everything from bathing to removing laundry stains. When I grew up, moved on, and started my own family, my mother gave me a few bars of Mrs. Martins soap that I enjoyed for quite some time. Eventually the soap ran out, and I began to wonder if I too could make this wonderful soap. By now Mrs. Martin had passed on but when I mentioned the soap to my mother, I found that she had some of her paperwork on the soap. Some of the documents were handwritten, some were typed from farm co-ops and all of them involved using ash to create lye and hand rendering pork into lard. Well, I didn’t have easy access to a pig farm or an abundance of ash, so I began to research how modern-day soap is made using sodium hydroxide, oils, essential oils, exfoliants, and the chemical process of saponification. After much practice I developed my recipe and have made luscious soaps for my family and friends for many years. Recently I retired and my granddaughter, Madison, approached me with the idea of starting a soap business together. She didn’t have to ask twice as this has been a dream of mine for many years. Madison and I make soap because making soap makes us happy. We hope that using our soap will make you happy too.

My name is Madison and I first learned about making soap from my grandma. I remember always smelling the different soaps when I was little. As I got older she taught me how to make it too. When I was in high-school we talked about starting a business selling soap and that's how Mama Love's Soap came to be. I had no idea where my life was gonna go after high-school but I realized that this was what made me happy and could be my purpose. We've already learned a lot more about crafting soaps since we first started but we know there's more to try. Now we spend our days making our soaps, trying new techniques, and learning all we can about the craft.
